Sound Menu December 05 2001 Fri

CHRISTMAS WITH THE ASO — See listing for Thurs., Dec. 6. Symphony Hall (Sarig)

COCKED EDDIE — Sometimes good old rock and “f”-ing roll is all that will suffice. So all you artsy coffeehouse types best relocate when this turbo-cranked trio gives up the goods. Energized, dangerous rock with a ‘tude that says, “Touch me again and I will hurt you.” Breakers/Jonesboro (Hutchinson)

DON CONOSCENTI, MIKE WILLIS — Known as Don Con to his followers, Colorado-based Don Conoscenti is both an insightful songsmith and a captivatingly understated vocalist. He’s also a breathtaking guitar player who can ring an astonishing range of beautiful sounds from six and 12-string instruments. Warm-toned folkie Mike Willis opens the late set. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)

THE CRAYONS — Making the most of a limited color selection, the Crayons keep the two-guys-on-two-acoustic-guitars-doing-two-part-harmonies thing interesting. Taking the stage names “Green Crayon” and “Blue Crayon,” the duo uses subtle shading and negative space to sketch out its bittersweet but kinetic style. Somber Reptile’s Cajun Kitchen (Hutchinson)

THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN, TED LEO, EL GUAPO — See Dismemberment Plan in Record Reviews, p. 103. An increasingly frequent visitor to Atlanta over the last year, Ted Leo (of Chisel fame) is welcome back anytime, so long as he plays songs from his amazing romantic retro-pop collection, The Tyranny of Distance, which is aces above any and all of the mod revivalists if only for its sheer number of catchy hooks. For those who like their indie rock a little less structured, El Guapo combine free jazz and ’70s avant garde atonal (proto-)punk, but never get too lost in the mix. Echo Lounge (Ware)

THE PETTING ZOO — Pablo and Karma present some of their famed debauchery paired with only the finest in beats. Laying down the tribal breaks is none other than New York’s electro-fying legend Afrika “Planet Rock” Bambaataa, joined by Mellow D, Starboy, Lisa Foxxx and more. So what is the “Petting Zoo” you ask? Depending on where you put stickers issued at the door determines where you invite people to pet you. Fine family entertainment. Karma (Ware)

REVEREND HORTON HEAT — Rejoice! The good Rev is back for his latest revival meeting — which always promotes more sinnin’ than savin’. The psychobilly trio, led by charismatic singer/guitarist Heat, has always been more gloriously off-kilter than, say, Brian Setzer or the Paladins. Certainly neither of those acts would ask an audience to “nurture their pig.” The Rev’s latest is Spend a Night in the Box. Snake handlers get in for half-price. Masquerade (Ruggiero)

REBIRTH BRASS BAND — Regular house-rockers of New Orleans’ Jazzfest, the funky, classy Rebirth Brass Band is deservedly a darling of fans and critics alike. Formed when its members were in high school, they share the natural ease — and the consequent musical freedom — of such a longtime connection. On top of that, they’ve got soul to spare. Variety Playhouse (R. Kelly)

URBANEXPERIMENTALIST — This new emerging-artist showcase premieres tonight, led by neo-soul/hip-hop poetry outfit Jjason Blackwell — who coined the “urbanexperimentalist” term. Female soul quartet Mizchief and Macon’s 8-piece Souldisiac, also perform. Hosted by Soukeyna and Liberty, with WRAS’s Cara C. on turntables, the event hopes to “inject new life into the alternative soul scene.” Apache Cafe (Horowitz)

FRED WEAVER — The lo-fi Louisiana musician is touring again after last year’s ill-fated tour with Pennsylvania’s Don Caballero. In fact, he may even have a few of their T-shirts left over to sell to help defray damages from their tour van accident. He’ll definitely have a fistful of rough but melodic acoustic masterpieces to present. Weaver’s work isn’t pretty, but those who rise to his challenge will be rewarded. An intense evening is assured. The Earl (Smith)

THE WHITE ANIMALS — Regionally successful rockers back in the ’80s, the Nashville-based White Animals recently regrouped to push a new compilation disc, 3000 Nights in Babylon, featuring material from a half-dozen previously released albums. With a sound that suggests the diverse pop/rock energy of the Beatles blended through a more workmanlike Music City songwriting style, these Animals are poised to prowl proudly once more. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
