TANYA MORGAN, DARIEN BROCKINGTON, SOCIAL ESPIONAGE One of the best hip-hop albums this year is by Tanya Morgan, a trio of MCs from Brooklyn and Cincinnati. Its debut, Moonlighting, is straight-from-the-gutter raw hip-hop that’s happily unpretentious (on one of the songs, “Just Cause I Got Locks,” Ilyas warns you not to pet his dreadlocks). Brockington is a Durham, N.C., soul artist best known for his appearances on Little Brother’s The Minstrel Show and Pete Rock’s Soul Survivor II. PELICAN, MONO These monolithic metal post-hardcore bands — one from Chicago (Pelican) and one from Japan (Mono) — share a propensity for density. Both instrumental bands explore post-rock’s loud-soft dynamics with punishing riffs shrouded in bristling musings, and at times melancholic orchestration, while also indulging in lithe prog’s string-swept pangs. While producing some severely claustrophobic swarms, these trance-inducing bands produce a sound that can be voluminous without relying on sheer volume. JAMIE LAVAL AND ASHLEY BRODER A rare treat indeed: an evening of classic fiddle and mandolin music, rich in melody and deeply emotional. Laval is a Scottish fiddle champ, and his beautiful work has been heard on many movie soundtracks. UGK Until the media “discovered” Houston hip-hop last year, Underground Kingz (aka UGK) was one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Bun B and Pimp C issued plenty of material throughout the 1990s, occasionally bubbling to the mainstream via hits like “Pocket Full of Stone” (from the Menace II Society soundtrack) and Jay-Z’s classic “Big Pimpin’.” Now reunited after Bun B’s three-year incarceration on gun charges, UGK returns to Atlanta for what promises to be a hyped experience with plenty of local rap heroes in the house. JOSEPHINE FOSTER, DQE Foster gives weird Americana a European makeover with a set of “kunstlieder,” or art songs, by the likes of classic, high-brow composers such as Brahms, Schubert and Wolf. The material stems from her latest release, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, which she sings entirely in German.
