??
TANYA MORGAN, DARIEN BROCKINGTON, SOCIAL ESPIONAGE One of the best hip-hop albums this year is by Tanya Morgan, a trio of MCs from Brooklyn and Cincinnati. Its debut, Moonlighting, is straight-from-the-gutter raw hip-hop that’s happily unpretentious (on one of the songs, “Just Cause I Got Locks,” Ilyas warns you not to pet his dreadlocks). Brockington is a Durham, N.C., soul artist best known for his appearances on Little Brother’s The Minstrel Show and Pete Rock’s Soul Survivor II. Atlanta hip-hop band Social Espionage kicks off this night of soul artists on the rise. 9 p.m. $10. Apache Cafe. 404-876-5436. www.apachecafe.info. — Mosi Reeves

??
ATLANTA BALALAIKA SOCIETY Celebrating its 25th year, the Atlanta Balalaika Society is one of the few authentic Russian folk instrument orchestras outside of Russia. ??
ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY The ever-changing Costello comes to town with a new musical muse: orchestra and vocals. ??
MOTOR 76, CODE ATOM, FERVOR Just back from a whirlwind tour of Ireland’s finest strip clubs, interrupted occasionally by visits to rock venues and radio stations to spread their Southern-punk gospel, the mighty Motormen are ready to celebrate. ??
PAULINE OLIVEROS New music legend Oliveros is guest artist for a multimedia happening at RailRoad Earth, under the backyard tent-covered performance stage. At this improvisatory event, surround-sound audio and multiplane video will interact in interesting, unpredictable ways based on the actions of performers — which include local musicians and video artist Dick Robinson and others. The show is scheduled to begin at sunset. $5-$10. 8:30 p.m. RailRoad Earth. 404-373-4309. www.rre.net. — MG

??
PELICAN, MONO These monolithic metal post-hardcore bands — one from Chicago (Pelican) and one from Japan (Mono) — share a propensity for density. Both instrumental bands explore post-rock’s loud-soft dynamics with punishing riffs shrouded in bristling musings, and at times melancholic orchestration, while also indulging in lithe prog’s string-swept pangs. While producing some severely claustrophobic swarms, these trance-inducing bands produce a sound that can be voluminous without relying on sheer volume. The Life & Times deliver crisp, intricately woven dovetails of emocore. 7 p.m. $12. Drunken Unicorn. www.thedrunkenunicorn.net. — TW

??
JAMIE LAVAL AND ASHLEY BRODER A rare treat indeed: an evening of classic fiddle and mandolin music, rich in melody and deeply emotional. Laval is a Scottish fiddle champ, and his beautiful work has been heard on many movie soundtracks. With Broder on mandolin, it’s a perfect way to end Mother’s Day. $14. 7:30 p.m. Eddie’s Attic. 404-377-4976. www.eddiesattic.com. — JK

??
UGK Until the media “discovered” Houston hip-hop last year, Underground Kingz (aka UGK) was one of the region’s best-kept secrets. Bun B and Pimp C issued plenty of material throughout the 1990s, occasionally bubbling to the mainstream via hits like “Pocket Full of Stone” (from the Menace II Society soundtrack) and Jay-Z’s classic “Big Pimpin’.” Now reunited after Bun B’s three-year incarceration on gun charges, UGK returns to Atlanta for what promises to be a hyped experience with plenty of local rap heroes in the house. Call for price. 9 p.m. Atlanta Live. 404-477-0707. www.dekalbeventcenter.com. — MR

??
BLAME GAME, ECHO IS YOUR LOVE There are many reasons not to miss this show. First, this is Blame Game’s drummer Alex Lambert’s moving-to-New-York-City party. It’s also the release party for Blame Game’s brand new 12-inch EP, Ask Someone. Echo Is Your Love, Blame Game’s experimental drone-pop labelmate from Helsinki, makes its American debut in support of its latest release, Humansize. Parsec and Techine open. $5. 9 p.m. Lenny’s. 404-577-7721. www.lennysbar.com. — Chad Radford

??
TUES/16

??
JOSEPHINE FOSTER, DQE Foster gives weird Americana a European makeover with a set of “kunstlieder,” or art songs, by the likes of classic, high-brow composers such as Brahms, Schubert and Wolf. The material stems from her latest release, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, which she sings entirely in German. Atlanta’s indie-rock staple DQE opens the show with a set of art-damaged and freewheeling noise pop. $8. 8:30 p.m. Eyedrum. 404-522-0655. www.eyedrum.org. — CR

??
WED/17

??
DJ KEMIT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION DJ Kemit started his career in the early 1990s as a member of the conscious-rap crew Arrested Development. Free (but donations are welcome). 10 p.m. The Royal. 404-653-1644. — Carlton Hargro

??
EUGENE MIRMAN, MICHAEL SHOWALTER, LEO ALLEN New York City comedian and filmmaker Mirman makes a stop at the Earl on tour with his second full-length CD, En Garde Society!. Mirman traverses the country performing stand-up comedy in indie-rock clubs. His absurdist sense of humor takes aim at everything from right-wing politics to his own grandmother. Comedians Showalter and Allen open. $12. 9 p.m. The Earl. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com. — CR

??
KAYENNE The soul vocalist known simply as Kayenne seemingly came out of nowhere with the song “Love Shampoo,” which garnered a ton of radio play without the support of a label. Sporting a beefed-up, Vivian-Green-esque sound, Kayenne starts a series of monthly live performances tonight at Django. Expect to hear covers of soul classics and cuts from her upcoming debut album. $10. 10 p.m. Django. 404-347-8648. www.djangoatlanta.com. — CH

??
THE WOOD BROTHERS Oliver (King Johnson) and Chris (Medeski, Martin & Wood) have joined forces to create a tasteful blend of Deep South blues with big-city jazz sophistication. The result, Ways Not to Lose, is a pleasure from start to finish. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear the duo in an intimate setting. $15. 8:30 p.m. The Five Spot. 404-223-1100. www.ticketmaster.com. — JK
