Road trippin’

The I-75 stretch from Atlanta to Macon is heavy on Waffle Houses and middle fingers but short on lively roadside scenery. Some of these tunes eased the ride along and the other tracks stuck in my head after arriving on a rainy, rainy Friday.

??
1) “Hard Luck Guy” — Eddie Hinton: Part of the Drive-By Truckers’ PA music and one of the most beautifully tortured vocal takes ever recorded.

??
2) “Even a Dog Can Shake Hands” — Warren Zevon: A fitting dis of the music industry from the R.E.M. collaboration days. Blast some Zevon to become the whitest thug in traffic.

??
3) “One More Ride” — Johnny Cash with Marty Stuart: A most reliable road-trip anthem from the early Cash cannon, redone in the ’80s.

??
4) “Fat Man in the Bathtub” — Little Feat: “Juanita, sweet Juanita, what are you up to?” Fiddling for the defrost switch, that’s what.

??
5) “Ain’t That Loving You” — Doug Sahm: Accompanied a nice sit-down dinner and even more rain. Take it away, Augie!
