Edwin’s McCain’s TV show, Gospel Music Association Awards, Mandorico breaks up
On Thurs., April 13, a new music show hits Turner South’s airwaves. “Music Road,” hosted by Edwin McCain (right), rambles all across the South, from Atlanta to Asheville, Memphis to Nashville. The first episode features—who else?—Drive-By Truckers at the Georgia Theatre.

“It’s about bands in bars,” says “Music Road” producer/director Jim May, who expects to create 20 episodes during the first season. “There are a number of clubs across the South that feature music on a continual basis, and it’s about trying to capture that sense of Southern music.”

Another upcoming “Music Road” episode takes place at Apache Cafe, where Anthony David, David Ryan Harris, Heavy Mojo and Divi Baby all performed one night. Look out for the scene where McCain sings with David and Harris, improbably mixing a little acoustic rock with neo-soul.

There are lots of random items this week. First up, congratulations to Third Day and Casting Crowns, both of which won honors at the 37th annual Gospel Music Association Awards on April 5. ... The Atlanta-based Gospel Music Channel can now be found on local cable, as well as in several dozen other cities. It is the first TV channel in the United States dedicated solely to Christian music. ... Popular funk-rock sextet Mandorico announced it is breaking up. “The reasons are many and we’re very sorry to see this phase of our lives go away but we have certainly enjoyed the years making music and touring,” reads a statement on its website, www.mandorico.com. If you haven’t seen Mandorico before, Fri., April 14, at Smith’s Olde Bar is your last chance.

On the national front — and we’re sure the rest of the world already knows this — we just realized that “American Idol” hopeful Paris Bennett is from Fayetteville. Good luck with that one. ... T.I.’s fourth album, King, sold 522,000 copies during the last week of March, achieving the best opening-week sales of any album this year. ... According to an MTV.com report, Mastodon finished recording its upcoming album, which is now titled Blood Mountain. It’s scheduled for an August release.

Surprisingly there’s only one CD release party this week. Rock band Jondonson celebrates Inverness Way with a Tues., April 18, performance at 10 High. Brosius and Point 6 Cents are the openers.
