Sharp Notes May 02 2001

Local God-rockers Third Day were big winners at last week’s Dove Awards for gospel music. The band won five awards: group of the year, artist of the year, best rock song, best praise/worship album and best special-event album. The ceremony airs May 4 on WGN.

He ain’t heavy. The Black Crowes will make every performance from their upcoming Tour of Brotherly Love (yeah, right) with Oasis available for streaming via a secure online site. Passwords will be encoded on CD copies of their soon-to-be-released Lions album.

The Josh Joplin Group’s new single “Camera One” was featured in a recent episode of the low-rated WB network show “Roswell.” More impressively, the song was the first tune released by an independent label to ever reach No. 1 on the Triple A chart. In other WB successes, Ultrababyfat’s single “Bored in Paris” will be featured in “Felicity” May 3.

Silent movie. Film’s lead singer Mike Lee suddenly decided to pursue a solo career just before playing a high-profile Boston showcase. Weird timing, especially since the band has been on a remarkable upswing lately and their newly recorded, Rick Beato-produced album is due soon. Those interested in filling the slot should call 404-283-1216 or click on www.planetfilm.com/audition. The band will open for They Might Be Giants and Joydrop at a free Centennial Park show June 29.
