Cadillac Jones' money shot

Cadillac Jones bassist Hutch Renaud was walking around East Atlanta one day in 1999 when he noticed a funky rib shack called The Village. At the time, Renaud and a couple of horn players had been playing standard jazz in the Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington tradition. "We thought it would be fun to do jazz improv over a '70s groove," says Renaud. "[The Village] looked like [how] we were trying to sound." Eventually, Cadillac Jones took its greasy grooves across town and found an eager audience at Smith's Olde Bar. But wherever the Cadillac parks, its decidedly '70s-inspired funk is the perfect soundtrack to an evening of club activity. "We're not too demanding on the ears or the mind," Renaud says. "We have a lot of improv sections, and there's activity, but we're not demanding full attention. You can be facing the other direction and get just as good a show."

Cadillac Jones' sassy saxes and brassy horns, accompanied by Renaud's snaky bass lines, would be right at home in a porn flick. In fact, Fluffertrax.com, a website devoted to the sounds of '70s adult cinema, is a big supporter of Cadillac Jones. Then there are the titles of some of the band's tunes — "Hot Tub," "Adults Making Love," "Sweat Shop," "I Gets Down" — even "Money Shot."

Would Cadillac Jones consider scoring a real porn film? Without hesitation, Renaud blurts, "We would love it!"????

Cadillac Jones plays The Village Sat., Aug 3, and Jake's Roadhouse Sun., Aug. 4.
