The Local

758 Ponce De Leon Ave.The Local is like the Elks Lodge for neighborly urbanites, grad students, local indie rockers and Tortillas ex-pats (the last two are usually one and the same). Whether there for karaoke, trivia or to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, locals love how they’ll always run into someone they know at the Local.

1) “Mad World” - Tears For Fears: For a minute there I thought it was Easter, not St. Patrick’s Day. Because of the psychodrama Donnie Darko, I will forever associate this song with a 6-foot tall rabbit named Frank.

2) “Slow Ride” - The Beastie Boys: This should have been the theme song to Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Just hearing it gives me the munchies, like I’m blazing through a bale of Mexican swag with Neil Patrick Harris in the back of a lowrider.

3) “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down” - Interpol: Interpol don’t look like the kind of guys with puerile senses of humor, but you gotta wonder if this is the same kind of joke as David Lee Roth-era Van Halen’s Diver Down.

4) “There Is a Light that Never Goes Out” - The Smiths: Every time I hear the Smiths, I remember when my friend Jerry held a Smiths party and traipsed around the room shirtless with a bandage over one nipple.

5) Some Pogues song - The Pogues: Ah, now we’re getting down to brass tacks. Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day like the mealy mouthed, toothless howl of shambolic punk-folk sketches. So gum a Guinness for Shane MacGowan and the lot, you sods. I’m pissed right proper.??
