Record Store Day 2014 field guide

7 best bets for getting into the spirit of RSD

Since Criminal Records owner Eric Levin co-founded Record Store Day in 2007, the store has been the staging ground for one of the biggest annual shindigs every year. This year, the party moves to an outdoor stage in front of the store. Cousin Dan hosts a roster filled with performances by a diverse lineup, including Spirits and the Melchizedek Children, Sadistic Ritual, deadCAT, Methuzulah, the Whigs, and more (Cloud Nothings, anyone?). Mood Rings headline, and the first 500 people in line will receive a free coffee mug featuring this year’s Sonic Youth-inspired RSD tribute image created by Nathaniel Russell. Georgia State’s WRAS and Georgia Tech’s WREK, along with King of Pops and Aurora, will be parked in front of the store all day. 1154 Euclid Ave. 404-215-9511.

This year, Decatur CD is concentrating on the music, offering a fully stocked selection of more than 350 RSD titles. The store expects too many people coming through the door to host any live performances, but it is putting together an extensive sale for the often-overlooked CD customers. 356 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-371-9090.

Kicking off at 11 a.m., Riverdale’s DBS Sounds will host a daylong celebration full of indoor and outdoor music. Performers for the day include: Noel Gourdin, Christopher Williams, Abdul Ra’oof of the S.O.S. Band, Joey Sommerville, Alex Lattimore, Lowell Pye, Calvin the 3rd, Ric Flo, Preme Cordice, Marica Chisolm, Lord Infamous (the pop artist), Keysa, and more. Plus, there will be sliders and wings from the Grubbin’ Out food truck and DJ sets from Farenheit, Goldfinger, Mad Max, and DJ Jelly. 6610 Highway 85, Riverdale. 770-997-5776.

Fantasyland Records in Buckhead will have the all limited-edition goodies and memorabilia you’re looking for. The store is opening an hour earlier (10 a.m.) to give customers more time to pick through its massive collection of used CDs and LPs. 360 Pharr Road. 404-237-3193.

Moods Music, aka Little 5 Soul, is lining up a full day of performances by DJs and other live acts for Record Store Day, and will offer discounts on its potent inventory of neo-soul, acid jazz, local DJs, and hip-hop. Check out Crib Notes this week for more on who the store has lined up. 1131 Euclid Ave. 404-653-0724.

The brand-new vinyl-focused Sunbrimmer Records in Avondale Estates is open for RSD and looking to stock its shelves with 45s, cassettes, and 78 RPM records that day. 4 N. Clarendon Ave. 404-343-3892.

In addition to the Record Store Day specials and the usual two-for-a-dollar CD sale in the back, Wax N’ Facts will host live performance throughout the day, including Kim Ware and Her Hidden Agenda, Murder Lisa, the Skylarks, Weary Heads, the Soogs and friends, and Muletide Perkins Trio. 432 Moreland Ave. 404-525-2275.
