2 Chainz & Lil’ Wayne: ColleGrove

It’s hard not to get excited about the lyrical possibilities of the musical bromance between 2 Chainz and Lil’ Wayne. Since the former was going by Tity Boi, the two men have had a mutual respect for each other. ColleGrove is dubbed a collaborative album, but it’s more like 2 Chainz’s dedication to a mentor where said mentor occasionally graces the album with some rhymes. The end result is a mixed bag of good (“Bounce,” “Blue C-Note,” “100 Joints”), bad (“Gotta Lotta”) and, well, too much Wayne worship (“Dedication”). What makes 2 Chainz a star was his ability to find success on his own footing. ColleGrove is a reminder that sometimes going at it alone is the better bet. ★★★☆☆
