Cafe Tacuba

SiNo

For those familiar with Café Tacuba’s work, SiNo would seem like a departure from what has traditionally defined the Mexican quartet’s sound. And yet, if you take a close listen to all five of its previous studio albums (and handful of live albums and EPs), you’ll notice its “sound” has been a true mélange of influences from all over Mexico, Latin America and the world. In SiNo, Café Tacuba takes aim at channeling popular rock from the ’60s and ’70s, fusing it with its distinct approach and personality. With that in mind, a second listen to SiNo reveals the album for what it really is, the logical next step for a band that has broken the mold with every release, opting to evolve as a group and challenging its listeners to follow along. 4 stars.

Café Tacuba plays the Masquerade Thurs., Dec. 13. 8 p.m. $30.
