Dr. Conspiracy: Nuclear Mysticism

Psych Army Intergalactic

With his second album, Nuclear Mysticism, Dr. Conspiracy continues mining hip-hop’s rhythms and cut-and-paste techniques to craft a profoundly psychedelic experience. From the waves of sitar ambiance that set the album in motion with “Hello, I am the Nuclear Mystic,” Conspiracy creates an atmospheric kaleidoscope of shifting sonic textures and styles that bleed into a bombastic beatscape. “Brain” (featuring Creashun) samples and repurposes the ambiance of Wu-Tang’s “C.R.E.A.M.” “Heaven” brings a driving sense of urgency to the album via a deluge of samples and scratches courtesy of Deejay Midnighto. And “I Dominate Break Loops” gives a nod to the local psych scene by sampling Abby Go Go’s “White Car.” It’s not a particularly innovative offering, but it’s a damn solid return to old-school sampling and heady turntablism. ★★★★☆
