Jesse Fischer & Soul Cycle: Homebrew

Soul Cycle Music

Rarely does a contemporary jazz album attempt to impress fans of straight-ahead without forsaking its dance-floor groove and old soul references. While contributors such as award-winning, feather-soft vocalist Gretchen Parlato will draw attention - as she should on a rendition of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” - the fourth release from Fischer stands on its own in the jazz/funk landscape. The bossa nova backdrop of “Dark Waters” adds complexity with its undeniable pull. Flute and scratches from DJ Ty Adams combine for the feel of summer in New York on “Nuyorican Vibes.” And “A New Beginning” just begs for a throaty tenor to make his sweet nothings known. It’s worthy listening, whether in a mood or setting one. (4 out of 5 stars)
