Jim Jones: Pray IV Reign

Dipset alum Jim Jones’ many projects include an off-Broadway show, a workout DVD, a documentary and a mockumentary. Once in a while he actually puts out some music, and his major label solo debut Pray IV Reign is an often-decent, occasionally-excellent effort. Lacking much in the way of big name producers or guest rappers, its success rests almost entirely on Jones’ (not insignificant) charm. His flow is relaxed, his beats are relaxed and, apparently, so are his feelings when it comes to carpet cleaning. (“Champagne glasses/Please fill ‘em up/Don’t be scared that you’re spilling it,” he raps on “This Is the Life.”) He spends much of the album predictably chronicling his riches, his exploits with women and, of course, his impeccable taste in booze. But it’s always easy to listen to and, when he lets his guard down — such as on up-from-the-gutters anthem “Rain” — sometimes even inspiring. 3 stars
