Solange: True EP

Terrible Records

After spoon-feeding “Losing You” to the musicverse, Solange not only delivers the main entrée with True, but treats us to dessert and leftovers. Co-produced and co-written with Devonte “Blood Orange” Hynes, Solange follows up the ’60s/’70s-inspired SoL-Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams with an ’80s throwback — complete with cameos from vintage Casio drums, Oberheim synths, and Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White. Boasting a nontraditional structure in regards to songwriting and production efforts, Hynes and Solange opt for slow grooves to tell a story of unrequited love, “Losing You” and “Locked in Closets” being the only exceptions. Paced to a tranquil close with the standout track “Bad Girls (Verdine Version),” True is a redux of the ’80s greatest moments, glazed by the Solange clan’s Midas touch. (4 out of 5 stars)
