McKinney facing cancer fight

Georgia State Rep. Billy McKinney, D-Atlanta, was resting in Crawford Long Hospital Monday morning four days after surgery to repair two aneurysms in his groin.

At the hospital, doctors also discovered colon cancer, but will wait to treat the illness until McKinney regains strength from Thursday’s surgery, says aide Pat Jackson. The 74-year-old’s prognosis is good, and the cancer was caught early.

Expect McKinney to campaign for colon cancer awareness once he recovers, Jackson says.

McKinney has served 27 years in the Georgia Legislature.

Most recently, he helped negotiate the release of children taken into custody by the state from the homes of House of Prayer members.??
