Love Shack fortifies for legal battle
John Cornetta has been waging a one-man war over pornography in Gwinnett County and he's bringing in a big gun to help him out.
The owner of two Love Shack adult novelty and video stores has hired Larry Flynt's attorney, Cincinnati-based Louis Sirkin, to defend him against obscenity charges. Although Sirkin is not the same lawyer played by Edward Norton in The People vs. Larry Flynt, he has represented Flynt in recent years.
Cornetta, who was busted in March along with five employees for selling triple-X movies at his first Love Shack location on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, was arraigned last week in Gwinnett State Court on misdemeanor charges. His trial date is expected to be announced as early as this week, says county Solicitor Gerald Blaney, whose office is prosecuting the case.
Make no mistake, Cornetta vows, the case will go to trial. "I believe in what I sell and if I have to go to court and risk a year in jail, I'm willing to do this," he says.
But Cornetta warns that the jury better be ready to watch some smut, including the 17 films he says are named in the indictment. Among the titles seized in the March police raid were Gangbang Angels, Ass Friction 2000 and Hardcore Schoolgirls Vol. 15. "I plan to make the jurors watch all 51 hours of tape."
Cornetta, who also publishes Xcitement, a local adult-entertainment magazine, claims that the county took action against him only after officials realized he planned to open other local stores. His 2-month-old Love Shack II on busy Peachtree Parkway in Norcross has been the site of frequent community protests.
But his unpopularity in some quarters hasn't deterred him. Says Cornetta: "The last person brought to trial on obscenity charges in Gwinnett County was Larry Flynt, and they shot him."??
