Eastside neighborhoods moving on up

Now that they’re good and gentrified, Ormewood Park and Grant Park are getting two Midtown-type developments of their own, scheduled to be complete by summer’s end.

Little Azio will open just down Moreland Avenue from East Atlanta, at the intersection of Ormewood Avenue. Besides Little Azio — an Italian pizza, sandwich and pasta joint modeled after the one on Peachtree Street — three other restaurants are planned to open there, probably an ice cream shop and possibly a coffee shop and a burrito place, according to George Rohrig, owner of Cartel Properties.

Across the street, on the east side of Moreland, Rohrig is building a storefront with retail space on the bottom floor and living space on the second.

Cartel is also constructing a strip of shops and restaurants at 465 Boulevard, just south of I-20. Rohrig wouldn’t let us reveal the anchor restaurant yet, but think sushi and noodles. He also says that he wanted to put a coffee shop in the Boulevard development, but the Board of Zoning Adjustments rejected the idea. (Thanks a lot.)

“We are all excited about new restaurants in the area,” says City Councilwoman Carla Smith, who represents the area. “It’s right near the interstate, so it won’t bring traffic into the middle of our neighborhood. But we can still walk to it. That’s good because we’ll be able to walk off our dinner.”

Cartel also built the strip between Fifth and Sixth streets that’s home to Noodle, the other Little Azio and Joe Muggs.
