CL accused of racial discrimination

A former CL staff writer has filed a federal lawsuit against the newspaper alleging racial discrimination. In the suit, filed in the Northern District of Georgia, Rochelle Renford claims she was terminated “due to her race and in retaliation for her complaints of race discrimination.”

Renford was a staff writer at CL for two years and covered education. The suit contends she was “constantly harassed and screamed at by her supervisor, Ken Edelstein, due to her race.”

The suit further claims that as a result of her termination, Renford has suffered mental and emotional distress, as well as lost wages. Renford, now a Kentucky resident, first filed a charge of discrimination against CL with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in October 2003. The EEOC did not pursue the case but provided Renford with a “Notice of Right to Sue” in July.

Renford filed the suit against Creative Loafing Inc., in October. CL was served Jan. 26.

“The charges are false and we will vigorously defend ourselves,” said CL Senior Vice President Doug Tuthill. He said Renford’s attorney and CL’s attorney have met, but wouldn’t elaborate on the discussion.??
