The Blotter July 10 2003

At Hartsfield Airport, a 56-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Fla., was sitting in the airport atrium. A middle-aged man approached and told her to move out of his chair. The woman offered to share the chair, but refused to give up the whole chair. The man said he had a C-4 explosive in his bag and if it blew up, his dirty underwear would be all over the airport.

The woman said when the man left, he stole one of her sandals.

A female officer was working undercover on Peachtree Center Avenue. A homeless man approached her and asked if she was lost. No, she said. The homeless man grabbed the officer’s hair and pulled it out of her face. “Don’t cover your beautiful face,” he said. The man asked where she was headed. “Hooters,” she said. The man grabbed her arm and said, “Let’s cross the street.” No, said the officer, pulling her arm from his grip. He grabbed her arm again and said, “Let’s go.” The officer snatched her arm away. The man also asked for money while holding the officer. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and begging/soliciting.

A 63-year-old woman in DeKalb County said for several months, someone repeatedly entered her back yard and cut blooms from her red-top trees. Someone also put chemicals on the trees and stole bricks from the yard.

An officer arrived and noted that the trees were damaged by disease or chemicals. The woman also wanted to report that the house next door to hers is used as a dope house. She added that the house on the other side is used for prostitution. She said these houses possibly attracted people who have vandalized and stolen from her back yard.

A security guard at a grocery store on Monroe Drive saw two men grab a six-pack of beer from a shelf. The men concealed the beer in a plastic bag and walked into a store bathroom. So the guard called police. An officer entered the bathroom and saw the two men, sitting on toilets and drinking beer. Four of the six beers were consumed. The men, ages 46 and 57, both had strong body odor and stubble on their faces. They went to jail.

A 21-year-old man was asleep on a Monday morning at 10:16 a.m. He thought he heard someone knocking, so he got up and left the bedroom. Then, he saw a strange man walking out of the guest bedroom. The man wore jeans and a black T-shirt with yellow letters.

The 21-year-old was stunned. He started to ask the man what he was doing. Before he could finish the question, the man said, “I’m in the wrong house. I thought it was a girl’s house.” The man walked downstairs and out the front door. The 21-year-old walked downstairs and noticed that the front door was broken and open. He believes the man took only an empty shopping bag.

A 55-year-old man said another man came over to his apartment on Centennial Olympic Park Drive. During his visit, the 55-year-old went to the bathroom. When he returned, he noticed that the man was gone, along with two of his X-rated videotapes. The 55-year-old told police that a neighbor saw the man trying to sell his X-rated videotapes.

A 24-year-old woman on Pine View Terrace said a pharmaceutical company contacted her through MonsterJobs.com and hired her to be a processing clerk. Her job was to cash checks sent to her by a company in Tennessee, and then wire the money to the pharmaceutical company in France. She deposited the first check from the Tennessee company (for $4,925) into her father’s checking account. When the check cleared, they wired the money to the pharmaceutical company in France. Six days later, the father discovered that the bank had debited his account $4,925 because the check was fraudulent.

A 21-year-old woman was sitting in her jeep at the intersection of Fowler and 10th streets. A blond-haired man and a black-haired man — both in their early 20s — approached her. The black-haired man asked her for a ride. The blond tried to open the passenger door, but it was locked. Then, the black-haired man showed the handle of a gun tucked in his waistband (all she saw was the handle). “Unlock the door,” he said. The woman complied, and the two men got into her jeep. They told her to drive to West Paces Ferry Road. She complied. She said they smelled strongly of alcohol and were laughing and whispering to each other a lot.

She said at one point, the blond told her to look over her right shoulder. When she did, she saw that he had his pants down. At West Paces Ferry Road, they told her to stop in a residential area. The men got out of her jeep and said the incident was just a fraternity prank and the gun was fake. She drove away.

The woman called police, who lifted a few fingerprints from the passenger door.

On Cleveland Avenue, a 34-year-old woman shares a tent in the woods with a 40-year-old man. She was sleeping in the tent when the man started yelling at her. He blamed her for drinking all his beer. They argued, and he hit her back with a pole. Police arrived and found the man in the woods. He went to jail. The woman refused medical treatment.

At an apartment on Jonesboro Road, a 42-year-old man was getting some ice cream. His brother, age 39, told him not to eat the ice cream because it would give him a stomachache. They argued, and the younger brother hit the older brother in the face, which caused a small cut over his right eye. Medics arrived, and the older brother received a Band-Aid, but refused to go to a hospital. The younger brother fled before police got there.
