The Blotter February 12 2004

At 1 a.m., an officer saw a man with a lazy eye on a Spring Street sidewalk. The man was reading a book and talking to himself. The officer asked the man for identification, and discovered that the man was wanted in Carroll County. During arrest, the man was angry and verbally abusive. “When I searched him, I found a 6-inch steak knife in his pocket,” the officer wrote. The officer turned in the knife, along with the book the man was reading, to police property.

The book was the Holy Bible.

The man was charged with disorderly conduct and weapons violation.

A 911 operator received a call from a 55-year-old man who said he was going to kill a police officer because he is tired of being harassed. Three officers went to the man’s apartment on Metropolitan Parkway. The reporting officer wrote, “From outside his apartment, we could hear him talking on the phone, saying, ‘I am a Vietnam vet and I know how to kill, I’ll kill any police, it don’t matter.’”

The officers knocked on the door. In an aggressive voice, the man said, “Who is it?” The officers said they were police. The man said, “Go away, I didn’t call you people out here.” The man started talking to someone on the phone and said, “I’m just going to kill the police, whatever, I don’t care.” Officers opened the door, took away his cell phone and handcuffed him. He was taken to the psychiatric ward at Grady Memorial Hospital and charged with terroristic threats.

On Bankhead Highway, an officer noticed a 43-year-old man sitting in a parking lot, drinking a beer. The officer arrested the man for drinking in public. En route to jail, the man said, “Man, I didn’t even get a good swallow of my beer.” The man is homeless.

An officer was riding in an unmarked pickup truck on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The officer saw a 35-year-old woman standing on the corner “yelling for me to come back,” the officer wrote. “When I circled back, [the woman] got in the truck and asked what’s up. I stated I was delivering trashcans and wanted to take a break. I asked was she about business or what. She said she wanted to make about $10 and go in. I said what can I get for $10. She said some head or whatever. I said cool and drove her to the location where a marked unit was sitting in order to make the arrest.”

An officer was working undercover at the intersection of Third and Peachtree streets. A 37-year-old man with a tongue ring got into the officer’s car and offered to perform oral sex for $30. During arrest, the 37-year-old refused to relinquish his purse “and it had to be forcefully taken from him (strap broke),” the officer wrote. The man was charged with solicitation.

On Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, a 52-year-old man said another man came to his house to tell him to stop drinking so much. The 52-year-old said the other man hit him on his legs and head, knocked him out, and stole his wrench and sockets. Medics arrived and found that the 52-year-old had no visible injuries. He refused to go to a hospital.

An officer saw a woman in a gray sweat suit walking in the middle of Griffin Street. “Why are you walking in the middle of the street?” the officer asked. “I’m trying to buy $5 worth of marijuana so I can sell it for $20 and get my husband money for his bond,” the woman replied. She gave the officer a false name and date of birth. The woman appeared to be on drugs, the officer noted. She was arrested for disorderly conduct and false report to police. Then, she gave her real name and date of birth. She also told the officer she had a baggie of heroin in her underwear. She retrieved the heroin and gave it to the officer.

On Cascade Avenue, an officer saw a man walking down the street, screaming and cussing. There were several people at a nearby MARTA stop, including several children. The officer asked the man to come over. “[The man] started screaming that he was minding his own happy business,” the officer wrote. The officer repeatedly asked the man to come over and talk to him. The man refused and continued to scream. The man, age 29, was jailed for fighting words.

On Foundry Street, a 22-year-old woman said her husband was upset about a wedding ring. She said he grabbed her wrist and pushed her onto the floor. The husband said he was having words with his wife about the wedding ring that he bought her, and he grabbed her wrist. The husband was jailed for disorderly conduct.

At a grocery store on Piedmont Avenue, a security guard saw a woman holding a 1-year-old child. The guard watched as the woman took a package of feminine hygiene pads from a shelf and concealed them in her clothes. Then, she tried to leave the store. The woman, who is homeless, was arrested for shoplifting.

A man dressed in green (green shirt and green pants) was standing in front of a liquor store on Bankhead Highway. He was screaming “Fuck you” to customers and threatening to kill them. He blocked the entrance to the store and swung his arms wildly. The man was arrested, and during a search, police found a crack pipe on him.
