Talk of the Town - Wedding party October 28 2000

Celebrity sightings and high fashion in the ATL

Dah dum-da-dum isn’t a tune you hear too often in the fall. Weddings normally are held in the spring or summer. So, imagine my surprise when I found myself at one last Sunday. That was the day Keiran Neely, an Earthtone Soundsystem DJ, and Daphne Henson tied the knot with a small ceremony near Candler Park. At their reception at Anis, a French bistro owned and operated by Arnaud Michele, I heard of two rock star sightings last week.
The first came from “Kezza” from Essex, England, who ran into Alice Cooper at Junkman’s Daughter in Little Five Points. The father of shock rock was in town for a Chastain Park performance last Saturday. Kezza got the chance to exchange pleasantries, noting that the “very grand-daddyfied” rocker was hanging out with a “blonde, young chick.”
Local performance artist Jon-Jon (no one seemed to have a last name at this party) saw ‘N Sync’s Joey Fatone Jr. (do they ever leave this town?) at HMV record store in Lenox Square. No one could keep their eyes off him while he, a female companion and a bodyguard flipped through CDs. Unlike Cooper, Fatone made no effort to sign autographs or chat with anyone other than his honey. Well, excuse me Mr. Fatone. But then again, everyone deserves a chance to be normal, no matter how boring that is. Not boring at all, I’m sure was the ‘N Sync show at Philips Arena last Saturday.
Later that evening I caught up with Tia Landau, the sole proprietor of Kaya Club & Bistro in Midtown. She told me about the Boycott wrap party that was held there Oct. 17. The soon-to-be-shown HBO movie stars Jeffrey Wright (Basquiat, Shaft), who is an old buddy of Landau’s. They used to hang out quite a bit in the late ’80s on the upper West Side, frequenting a place called the All State Cafe. The party was an early affair — no hoopla or hype.
Plenty of hoopla took place at Park Pavilion last weekend. There, local fashion designer Keith “KeBo” Brown created quite a scene and a sexy dress for Bonnie Borschardt, an investment advisor, celebrating her birthday and that of her boyfriend, Don Keenan, the well-known child advocate and attorney. Guests got the chance to see her in the full Marilyn Monroe-esque, hand-dyed, Japanese silk dress. KeBo, on the other hand, wore his own interpretation of a tuxedo, adding a red vintage shirt with lace-trimmed collar and riding boots with the pants tucked in. One guest misinterpreted the ensemble, calling it a Capt. Hook look with dreads.
The previous Friday, KeBo and his companion, Lou Freeman, a fashion photographer, checked out the eleven50 opening in Midtown. KeBo was quite pleased with the A-list crowd that ranged from Petra and Trevor Ruffle, owners of Peke in Virginia-Highland; Mark Cook, owner of Legant Modeling Agency; and Reggie Ealy, legendary club proprietor and promoter. Most guests gave the restored interior rave reviews, but KeBo noticed that the white shag carpet in the VIP room could become unlucky for some, since he’d seen three people trip on the lovely but deadly thing.
I had hoped to hear more ‘N Sync stories, but I guess since Justin Timberlake is now going steady with Britney Spears, he’s not allowed to go out as much as he usually does when he’s in town. Could these boy bands be losing their edge? Dah dum-da-dum ... dum.
