Talk of the Town - Week at a Glance August 05 2000

Art
Athens artist Lou Kregel brings her bold, graphic designs to Atlanta in the show, Patterns for Commercial Application. Her repetitive images grace the covers of albums and accent tour merchandise of bands like Sugar, the Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M., and now these vibrant, geometrical images grace the walls of Mumbo Jumbo. Opening reception Aug. 4 from 6-9 p.m. On display through Aug. 31. Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Mon.-Sun. 5:30-11 p.m. 89 Park Place. Call 404-523-0330 for information.

Nightlife
Velocity Magazine presents one of the Detroit three, Derrick May, who, along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, set the stage for techno. As respected DJ Rythim is Rythim, May makes and manipulates music that combines Motor City madness with Windy City whimsy, adding a dash of New York City diva house and disco to move the crowd, which will surely crowd Karma for this rare occasion Aug. 5. Karma, 79 Poplar St. For more information call 404-577-6967.

Your Mission One, if you choose to accept it, is to go see Decibel 420 perform live Aug. 5. Music
At the height of grunge there was none higher than Pearl Jam. Think about it: They got to record an album as Neil Young’s backing band! Nirvana may have gotten the accolades, but Pearl Jam got the action. And now they bring the show on the road for the first time in forever with Sonic Youth in tow Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. $28. Philips Arena, One Philips Drive. For more information call 404-878-3000.

Metallica can’t stop Napster, but you’ve got to give them credit; even a back injury can’t stop the band from putting together a fun, if nothing else, make-shift show. They’re back to reward fans who put up with Korn at the originally scheduled show at the Georgia Dome. If you have a ticket stub from the July 7 show, you can go to any Ticketmaster outlet and exchange it for a pass good Aug. 5 or Aug. 6. No additional tickets will be sold for this show. A surprise guest is expected. Lakewood Amphitheatre, 2002 Lakewood Way. For more information call 404-249-6400.

The National Black Arts Festival continues with a soul-stirring mix of music and poetry when the R&B duo Ashford & Simpson joins poet Maya Angelou in a performance at the Civic Center Aug. 4 at 8:30 p.m. $25-$35. Call 404-730-7315 for information.

Rap and hip-hop heavyweights are digging in to get their piece of the peach this week. Legendary faves Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Eminem wind down their 25-city Up in Smoke Tour at Lakewood Amphitheatre Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. Expect “surprise guests” like N.W.A. alum MC Ren to take the stage. Banned in Detroit, this rabble-rousing road trip is sure to leave a good “vibe” hanging in the air. Or check out the Funk RapFest, featuring Cameo, Lil’ John, SOS Band and others at Philips Arena at 8 p.m. If you still haven’t gotten your fill, join top players for the kickoff of the Hip Hop World Party at the Tabernacle from 8 p.m.-3 a.m. The four-day event continues through Aug. 7 with concerts by Natty Love Joy, Zeno, 69 Boys, Jahmason and others, as well as a celebrity fashion show, promotional giveaways and contests. Call venues for information.
