Talk of the Town - Week at a Glance August 12 2000

Music
The Atlanta Local Music Awards and the Atlantis Music Conference team up to honor the major players and up-and-comers in the local music arena Aug. 9-12. Jennifer Nettles, Goodie Mob and the Brand New Immortals are just a few of the acts lined up to rock the ALMAs Aug. 9 following an award presentation for Atlanta’s best songwriter, rap/hip-hop artist, live venue and more. The week continues with informational panels hosted by industry players, an urban symposium taking an in-depth look at the artists, issues and business of this booming genre, and, of course, a showcase of musical talent featuring over 200 performers including an appearance by the Psychedelic Furs Friday at the Tabernacle. $10-$12 for ALMA admission. $25 for a three-night pass to musical showcases. Call 404-249-6400 or log on to www.atlantismusic.com for information.

Longtime Atlantans remember the Masquerade when it was more fetish, less frat, and baggy pants-wearing ravers would be scared to face the music. Appearances by Lords of Acid remind one of those days. The Lords have been logging trans-Atlantic travel time since the early ’90s, and are now touring on Expand Your Head, a collection of remixes. DJ Assault opens with his brand of ghetto-tech turn- tablism. Watch out. Blood is hard to get out of khakis. Aug. 10. 5:30 p.m. $20. The Masquerade, 695 North Ave. For more information, call 404-577-8178.

Festival
Expand your horizons. Get acquainted with the sights and sounds of India at the Festival of India 2000, a celebration of India’s independence Aug. 12-13. A cultural show will highlight the diversity of the regions of India featuring a performance by Vani Ganpathy, an accomplished Bharat Natyam dancer. Seminars will explore topics relating to Indian history, arts, philosophy and more. Enjoy regional arts and crafts at the exhibition or experience an Indian bazaar with lively street dances and vendor booths at a “Mela.” Events held at the Atlanta Civic Center (395 Piedmont Ave.) and the Gwinnett Civic Center (6400 Sugarloaf Parkway). $10-$100. Call 770-436-3719 for information.

Atlanta’s gay community is hitting the Hooch at the Hotlanta River Expo, the annual circuit party held Aug. 10-13. The event, celebrating the Year of the Dragon, will kick off Thursday with the Miss Hotlanta competition where lovelies will expose their, um, talents acting out this year’s theme: china doll. Every queen needs her king ... the Mr. Hotlanta competition will separate the men from the boys with competitions in casual wear, fantasy (like Gladiator, left) and swim wear with a shogun theme. A high energy dance/victory party will follow at the Fox Theatre with DJ Lydia Prim. The river runneth over Saturday when the tsunami party goes afloat. Sail your ship on over to the Main Event, a dragon dance with a host of DJs, or save your strength for Sunday’s Afternoon T party and closing event. Log on to www.hotlanta.org for more information.
