Bar Review - Shuck and suck

An amber-lit oyster bar, Fontaine’s is an elegant and trendy hotspot for twenty- and thirtysomethings to gather in Louisiana ambience. The cozy hardwoods and stone surroundings make for a laid-back meeting place nestled in the decidedly quaint Virginia-Highland neighborhood.
Sip your favorite poison at the friendly bar up front or dine on the L-shaped patio with a menu ranging from anything seafood to tequila key lime pie. Fontaine’s is known for their oyster specials, so don’t be afraid to sample an oyster shooter at the steel-hammered raw bar.
This most requested shot (a mix of fresh oyster, sake, lemon juice and wasabi) will make you squirm. The key is to chew — not just swallow — to get your juices flowing. Done right, the Wasabi coats your mouth in a numbing, fiery glaze before the bottom dweller even touches your taste buds, so taking a few chomps before swallowing is no problem if you can get past the slime. Forget beer goggles, after a few straight-up shots of this aphrodisiac elixir, you’ll be walking the plank with Captain Hook. (Luckily, the place is swimming with casually dressed hipsters, so you’re chances of catching a keeper are prime.) For the less adventurous (and less seaworthy), the bar is stocked with all the regular fixings as well. Bottoms up.
