See & Do - Special event: Atlanta Streets Alive! May 14 2010

Sun., May 23

May is Bike Month, and on Sun., MAY 23, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition celebrates by ushering in the city's first-ever ATLANTA STREETS ALIVE!, designed to promote physical wellness, eco-conscious commuting and support local businesses. People replace traffic when five miles of blacktop – stretching from Edgewood, Piedmont and North avenues – is closed to automobiles. Along the route there will be group activities highlighting Atlanta's diversity: yoga, hula-hooping and breakdancing, to name a few. Bonus round: Talking Heads frontman David Byrne lectures on Bicycles, Cities, and the Future of Getting Around Wed., MAY 19, for CNU 18: RX FOR HEALTHY PLACES, a gathering to discuss the hindering effects of sprawl upon healthy urban environments. In the spirit of bike love, Bicycle Tours of Atlanta offers $10 off tours during May with the code "LOAF" at www.biketoursatl.com. Atlanta Streets Alive!: Free. 1-6 p.m. Kickoff ceremony in Woodruff Park, 51 Peachtree St. www.atlantastreetsalive.com. David Byrne: $25-$30. 8 p.m. Tabernacle, 152 Luckie St. www.cnu.org.

Editor's note: The street closing has been reduced to two miles of blacktop. See a complete map of the new route at www.atlantastreetsalive.com/route.
