David Gray labored for years as a Welsh folkie playing small clubs around the world. Then, on his 1998 album, White Ladder, he layered funky drum machines over his calm melodies. The album sold 6 million copies, and he hasn’t messed with the formula since. He’s now touring behind his latest CD, Life in Slow Motion, a more operatic album than White Ladder, but one that maintains his style of mixing dark lyrics with soaring arrangements.
