Tongue-tied and twisted

Stoic literary convention gets a kick in the pants when three New York-based divas of the raucous Slam genre visit two Atlanta bookstores this week. Slam revives and celebrates poetry’s oral tradition and transforms readings into competitive, audacious and interactive events in which poets compete with one another in a spoken-word battle royale. Poet, novelist and performance artist Elena Georgiou, Lauren Sanders and Cheryl B. — who has been called the “mistress of absurd realism” — will read and shout at Charis Books & More, 1189 Euclid Ave. NE, July 27 at 7:30 p.m. and at Outwrite bookstore, 991 Piedmont Ave., July 28 at 7:30 p.m. The performances are part of the Jezebel2000 Glam Lit Tour. No tickets or reservations are necessary.
