Arts Agenda - Outside’s in

Eighty Exhibitors (including Clementine Hunter, whose “Life On the Plantation” is pictured above) will gather for Folk Fest 2000, one of the most comprehensive concentrations of Outsider art in the country. The three-day event at the North Atlanta Trade Center, I-85 and Indian Trail Road, kicks off Friday, Aug. 18, at 5 p.m. with a meet-the-artist party with hundreds of folk artists such as Woody Long and Annie Wellborn. Throughout the weekend, visitors may view, discuss and purchase rare folk art from mostly Southern collectors. A 50-lot Masterpiece Auction on Friday at 8:30 p.m. will include pieces by Sam Doyle and Clementine Hunter. Saturday and Sunday’s festivities include the Folk Fest’s recent addition of the Educational Symposia. Among the speakers is Lynne Spriggs who will discuss her two-year research and curating project on Sam Doyle and the culture of St. Helena, S.C. Her Local Heroes exhibit is currently at the High Museum of Folk Art and Photography Galleries. Folk Fest admission is $15 for the full weekend or $6 per day.
