Mouthful - Po’boys

Three different takes on the classic sandwich

Star Provisions To Go: A long-standing item on an ever-evolving seasonal menu, this posh po’boy is a favorite lunchtime item among regulars. The kitchen starts with a soft bun that’s slathered in a remoulade brightened by fresh chives and lemon juice. Large Georgia white shrimp covered in a buttermilk, flour and cornstarch mixture are fried in peanut oil then tucked into the bread along with bright green butter lettuce, sliced local tomatoes and dill pickles for added tang. 1198 Howell Mill Road, Suite 100. 404-365-0410. www.starprovisions.com.

Six Feet Under: This haven for fried seafood dishes up a quirky shrimp po’boy whose ingredients may not be traditional but are no less delicious. Large and crispy shrimp are nestled in a toasted hoagie roll with fresh spinach, sticks of cucumber, a sweet onion relish and cucumber wasabi sauce. Po’boys also come with oysters or a fried slab of catfish, but our money’s on the shrimp. 415 Memorial Drive. 404-523-6664; 685 11th St. 404-810-0040. www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com.

AJ’s Famous Seafood and PoBoys: This Marietta seafood joint has one lengthy po’boy menu. Po’boys are served “dressed” and come with your choice of fresh-cut french fries or red beans and rice. The shrimp version is a monster of a sandwich, tightly wrapped in white paper, and measuring a foot in length. The shrimp are on the small side, but the amount packed into the sandwich makes up for this shortcoming. Don’t forget one of the sauces, such as the lime-dill tartar. 2100 Roswell Road, Suite 200-0, Marietta. 678-999-0767. www.ajsseafood.com.
