Mouthful - Milk shakes at Chapman, Morelli’s and Zesto

Ice cream treats that bring all our boys to the yard

CHAPMAN DRUG CO.: In this modern age of convenience and drive-thrus, there’s something comforting — and kitschy — about finding an authentic soda fountain inside an old-school, family-owned drugstore. Since 1921, Chapman’s soda jerks have been mixing up “award-winning” malts, milk shakes and other ice-cream treats. There is no seating but Hapeville’s spruced-up row of retail and restaurants makes for an ideal stroll while you sip away. 615 N. Central Ave., Hapeville. 404-761-1136. www.chapmandrug.com.

MORELLI’S ICE CREAM: This recently opened gourmet mom-and-pop ice-cream shop was undoubtedly this summer’s hot spot because of its creative flavors, which are made from scratch with fresh and natural ingredients. While a scoop of the coconut-and-jalapeño or corn ice cream never fails to satisfy, the Mexican malted milk shake is one unique treat, with a deep chocolate flavor, a nice kick of cinnamon and that dreamy taste only malt can impart. 749 Moreland Ave. 404-622-0210. www.morellisicecream.com.

ZESTO DRIVE-IN: Shake lovers worth their syrup are well-acquainted with this iconic silver-and-neon-clad building on Ponce. Each decadent milk shake, malt and float is made with real soft-serve ice cream instead of the ice milk you find at some of the competition. Notable offerings are the strawberry milk shake — that actually tastes like strawberries instead of artificial flavoring — and the dreamy chocolate malt. 544 Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-607-1118 (and other locations). www.zestoatlanta.com.
