Mouthful - Reubens

MUSS & TURNER’S: In a departure from its predominantly homemade ways, M&T’s “Reason to Reuben” uses pre-brined corned beef brisket from New York State National Brand for authenticity’s sake, which they then cook on site. The sandwich is assembled on thick slices of griddled marble rye bread from the Grateful Bread Company, slathered with Admiration Russian dressing, the perfect amount of sauerkraut, Emmenthaler cheese, thin slices of corned beef and your choice of a pickle. Superb. 1675 Cumberland Parkway, Suite 309, Smyrna. 770-434-1114. www.mussandturners.com.

THE VORTEX BAR AND GRILL: Who would have guessed that this divey restaurant known for its burgers makes one sick Reuben? The “Classic Reuben” is a straightforward version of the deli standard. Slices of swirled marble rye are buttery without being greasy and toasted just enough to create a solid foundation. The corned beef is tender and the sauerkraut is vinegary without overwhelming the other ingredients. But the best part is the creamy mixture of melted Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing that oozes out of the sandwich with each bite. 438 Moreland Ave., 404-688-1828; 878 Peachtree St., 404-875-1667. www.thevortexbarandgrill.com

THE NEW YORKER MARKETPLACE AND DELICATESSEN: You can’t write about a New York sandwich without mentioning this Buckhead deli known for its gut-busting fare and endearing Big Apple attitude. The shop offers a few Reuben choices — including a leaner option made with turkey — but our favorite is “The New Yorker Reuben.” A mix of Thumann’s pastrami and corned beef, ‘kraut, spicy mustard and Admiration Russian dressing piled high on crusty, grilled rye bread. The sandwich is a monstrosity, but mercifully offered in half portions. 322 Pharr Road. 404-240-0260.
