Mouthful - Bagels

I’d be lying if I said I found the bagels that would cure your nostalgia for whichever bagel joint you are loyal to up north. But these spots make good versions that will scratch your itch for a bagel and some schmear.

BAGELICIOUS: This 18-year-old family-run operation, overseen by Long Island transplants Carol and Tom Carola, is as close as you’ll get to an authentic New York deli experience in Atlanta. Practically everything is made in house. Bagels, which come in regular and mini sizes, are boiled and baked fresh everyday. Also check out the large menu of deli classics — especially the towering “Bagelwiches.” 1255 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta. 770-509-9505.

BAGEL PALACE DELI & BAKERY: When asked who makes the “best” bagels in Atlanta, most people will point you towards this Toco Hills mainstay frequented by transplants, Emory students and deli enthusiasts. Dining in can be an exercise in patience, but the bagels are pure gold. 2869 North Druid Hills Road. 404-315-9016.

H&F BREAD CO.: Instead of trying to replicate a New York bagel, this Holeman and Finch offshoot makes a more rustic version, which only come in a few flavors. The bagels do need some time in the toaster, but they crisp up nicely and are even better with some of the bakery’s creamy and buttery Sierra Nevada cream cheese. 2255 Peachtree Road. 404-350-8822. www.hfbreadco.com.
