Profile - Kim Huapaya

Comedian, open-mic host

It’s tough to be a comedian anywhere, but even more so when you’re a female comedian in a city that’s not great about supporting its local comedic talent. Don’t take my word for it, though, just ask Kim Huapaya. But she’s trying to do something about that by hosting an open-mic night at the Funny Farm Comedy Club for all Atlantans aspiring to tell jokes on stage.

Huapaya is the creator, producer and host of what was formerly called “Make Me Laugh,” which takes place on the first and third Wednesday of every month. The club recently changed the show’s name to the “Open Mic and Showcase” because, Kim sarcastically says, “They wanted to be original.”

To get on the list to perform, e-mail Kim at talktokimcomic@earthlink.net, and don’t wait too long because she books two months in advance.

Huapaya was born in Boston and grew up in West Palm Beach, Fla., before moving to Atlanta in 2000. She moved here because her car broke down in the middle of a road trip from Florida to New York. While working to save up enough money to get her car fixed, she just decided to stay.

Huapaya’s a Hispanic Jew, which she says means, “Fuck with my money and I’ll cut you.”

Although Huapaya has been doing stand-up for the last two years, she still works a regular 9-to-5 as the office manager of SoftPro Technologies. To help Kim live the dream, come support her at her shows. To see when and where she is performing next, check out her MySpace page at www.myspace.com/huapayakim.
