A word to the wise: Don’t date someone with more than one cell phone — particularly if that person drives an RV, and especially if that RV is packed with enough cocaine to fuel Studio 54 during the summer of 1976. When one of 25 defendants in an alleged multistate drug ring was pulled over in Missouri while driving an RV from Georgia, the cop grew suspicious — partly because the driver was carrying three cell phones. The defendant’s attorney is now trying to have evidence obtained during the stop — including a whopping 95 kilos of coke — thrown out, alleging that the deputy didn’t have probable cause to search the vehicle. Regardless of the legitimacy of the search, or of defendant Jabari Hayes’ supposed involvement in the Atlanta and Detroit-based drug ring, one thing is clear: The excuses Hayes gave for having multiple cell phones ought to send a girl running. Below are excerpts from the motion to suppress physical evidence:</
“It is hardly a suspicious behavior for a person to rent an R.V. to travel to differing parts of the country to visit family, in fact, cross-country touring is one of the primary motivations for renting an R.V. ...</
Having multiple cell phones is similarly innocent behavior. Many people keep multiple cell phones for a multitude of non-criminal purposes. Some business owners keep multiple cell phones to separate business and personal calls and deduct the business phone from their taxes. Some men keep multiple phones because they have multiple girlfriends and are trying to prevent them from discovering one another in the phone’s call history. ... [T]hese reasons to have multiple cell phones are plausible and indicate innocent, noncriminal behavior. Moreover, Defendant explained to Deputy Crivello that all these considerations went into his decision to keep multiple phones.”
