Streetalk: How do you become a rock star in Atlanta?

“Be confident in your music. You can’t go up there and be all sensitive. That shit doesn’t work anymore.”

Steve: First you have to believe in yourself, and then you just become one. It all starts from the inside and heads out. Small pants, big world, baby, look out. What’s great about Atlanta is that the gigs don’t pay for shit, but the rent is cheap and Atlanta has a lot of pretty girls that inspire great songs. Sit-ups and pull-ups are involved. No one wants to see a fat rock star. Pray and play, baby.

April: Embrace the South. We have all this amazing old music and amazing old stories that are rooted deeply in Atlanta, and we tend to look other places, but we need to look inward and find inspiration that’s already here. In Atlanta, we have all the parts. We just have to put it in a functioning equation. If you’re doing something authentic and it’s clearly original, then you’ll get recognized properly. And we do a lot of experimental folk and a lot of theatrics. You go see bands and they’re on the stage and then they’re just off the stage. You need to engage the audience.

Ezz-Eldin: Balls and drive, really. You can’t just, like, sit around and expect everything to happen for you. You really have to go to shows and talk to the booking agents and just show them that you’re going to their shows, so they know you’re supporting them so that they will support you. It’s all about support because there’s such a big music scene around here. And play at your sister’s birthday party if you have to, as long as different people hear you. Be confident in your music. You can’t go up there and be all sensitive. That shit doesn’t work anymore.]
