Sistagraphy has a birthday!

A lot of cool exhibits are closing. A lot of cool exhibits are also opening. See John Westmark’s Flight and Fancy first, opening Friday at 2 Rules. A dichotomous exploration of male/female, Westmark’s paintings use sewing paper applied directly to canvas; his discursive images compare/contrast garment-making and engineering while denying the viewer the satisfaction of a conclusion. As he says in his statement, “Essentially, patterns and templates are the genesis of assembly.” Opening reception from 5-9 p.m.

Three more things (closings, celebrations) for your weekend below.

Mike Lowery and Katrin Wiehle’s joint show I’m Lucky to Be Here (with Someone I Like) is closing at Kai Lin. As our Andrew Alexander wrote, the show “might describe the happy animals gazing out at you from the wickedly charming illustrations currently on view at Kai Lin Art - those little fellas obviously seem to like each other - but it also just as handily describes the artists themselves.” Noon-7 p.m.

Beep Beep’s Space Aged, by local artists Mike Germon and Chelsea Raflo, is at its final weekend. Their collaboration is explicitly technological - and collaborative, combining collage, video, and installations. As Raflo has said, “The stories that wire their way through my brain circuitry and eventually shape-shift into a physical form tend to look less like neatly wrapped packages and more like expansive foggy plateaus.” Noon-6 p.m.
