Starting at 7 p.m. Friday, at MINT, you are invited to relax. The relaxing part is actually very important for Zzz zzz zzz zzz zzz, a collaboration between Jared Kelley and Erin Palovick. Palovick told me, “We’ve collaborated with musicians, poets, visual artists and performers, herbalists and dancers to cultivate a night of relaxation.” The first part of the evening is open to the public ($5 at the door), but at midnight the events focus in on a preselected group of 30, who registered in advance here. “Our overnight guests will be served calming food and drink before they are left to explore our relaxation stations at their own pace,” Palovick says. “At bedtime, Queersar will tuck everyone in - cuddles included. Your submission to relax will not be regrettable. It is irresistible.”
This goes on all evening, ending after dawn at 8 a.m. Don’t ask why. They wouldn’t want you to. “While prepping to become the concepts of the Holographic Universe and Deja Vu for our last performance, Erin and I, riding on a ten cup coffee bender gazed blearily into one another’s eyes and decided we were going to provide the most relaxing, calming evening for ourselves and our friends,” Kelley says. “We can assure that this night is not a sinister plot to concentrate and consume your most exalted stress. All pies are welcome.”

The Cuban photographer Abelardo Morell, based in Boston, will exhibit his camera obscura images - equal parts light, perspective and color; the reality of the thing being reproduced - at Jackson Fine Art in (the appropriately titled) Tent Camera Obscura. Morrell cites Bowdoin’s John McKee as a major influence; Morrell also has a long history of turning whole rooms into cameras obscura. With a reception from 6-8 p.m. and an artist talk on Saturday, at 11 a.m.

Kibbee Gallery will open Ebb and Flow, featuring “new works of abstraction” by Paul Rodecker and Stacie Rose. “Both artists create vibrant work that layer forms and colors, filling the space with motion and energy,” the gallery announced in a release. The techniques here are graphic and multidimensional, swoops and splotches and gatherings of color that run along the spectrum in what seems like a single stroke, without being trying. With a reception from 6-10 p.m.
