  • Beth Lilly

The interstate can be an ugly place, one littered with serious bouts with road rage and carcasses of fresh and very old road kill. Photographer Beth Lilly’s A Moving Image of Eternity at Whitespace Gallery is kind of the opposite of that. In fact, per the artist, it’s: “intimate portraits of people on the interstate caught in contemplation of their fate and fortune.” Now that’s a slow ride down the highway we’re willing to take. Opening reception from 7-10 p.m.

SUNDAY
Image According to the folks over at the LiFT Art Salon they’re “inspired by the salons of the 18th and 19th centuries, which were informal gatherings where creative, socially provocative, and cutting-edge ideas were exchanged.” With that in mind, the monthly LiFT Art Salon returns this weekend with it’s healthy dose of music, art, and conversation. This month’s edition features photography from Julian Plowden and spoken word poetry from members of #ItsBiggerThanYou and Atlanta Word Works. According to the LiFT team, all of the participating artists are activists, “who have been extremely active and leading members of the Atlanta protests against the execution of Mike Brown and other unarmed Black and Brown victims of police brutality.” From 5-8 p.m.

If you missed critic Andrew Alexander’s breakdown of Cézanne and the Modern and make a Joyful Noise at the High Museum of Art, here’s it is for a fresher. This Sun., Jan. 11, marks the very last day to see these exhibitions. The closing weekend features a lecture from Curator Gary Radke, a jazz concert by musician and minister Dwight Andrews, and a free organ concert at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. If you do anything, make sure to swing by the High before that clock strikes 5 p.m. For a full list of the closing weekend events click here.
