San Francisco-based, award-winning queer dancer and writer Sean Dorsey  not to mention, and the country’s first acclaimed transgender contemporary dance choreographer — brings his emotionally charged performance, The Missing Generation, to the 7 Stages Theatre for its Atlanta debut on Thurs., Feb. 4, starting at 8 p.m.

In the form of a love letter, the highly touted show centers around giving a voice to AIDS survivors of the ’80s and ’90s. Over a two year period, Dorsey conducted archival research and several oral interviews with AIDS survivors of the LGBT community, documenting their journeys of survival and their traumatic experiences with losing loved ones.

Through the art of intimate storytelling, dancers Brian Fisher, ArVejon Jones, and Nol Simonse (above) accompany Dorsey on stage. The performance also features recordings of the survivors telling their stories, Dorsey’s writings, and original music from composers Alex Kelly, Jesse Olsen Bay, Ben Kessler, and Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney.

ON THURSDAY

›› On display this Thurs., Feb. 4, at 7 p.m., The Thicket is a site-specific installation hosted by Marcia Wood Gallery - Castleberry. The Thicket is an immersive project by Karen Hennessee that takes spectators on a journey of discovery through the art and beauty of nature. Hennessee blends photography and mixed media with actual pieces of nature (vines, sticks, leaves), while also blending the 2-dimensional with the 3-dimensional.======

======”The blurring of a reality within an installation suggesting a deep thicket in a dark woods is the artist’s vehicle for exploring the mysteries and surprises life brings,” Marcia Wood Gallery reps said in a press release.

The Thicket is on view thru Feb. 20 from 1-5 p.m.

ON FRIDAY

›› Torque, a sculpture exhibition by Gregor Turk, opens at noon Fri., Feb. 5, at the Ponce City Market - Center Food Hall. Turk, the Atlanta-based visual artist known for his photography, sculptures, and mixed-media art, took a unique approach for this series.

Trash and found objects from flea markets, thrift stores, and yard sales make up a majority of works featured in Torque. Turk wraps this “junk” with discarded rubber from the inner tubes of bicycles.

Turk fashions the display of 50-plus artworks to resemble retail luxury brands. Expect to see boutique style items including chairs, bowls, globes, tables, and toys.

“The rubber reveals a patina of places and distances traveled,” he says. “The resulting sculpture, furniture, and other bound objects take on new meanings as emphasis shifts from their function toward form and surface.”

Torque will be on display through Feb. 28.
