Weekend Arts Agenda: Ragtime rolls out at Cobb Energy Centre April 21 2016

Playwright Terrence McNally’s Ragtime comes to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre for a two-show set Sat., April 23, at 7:30 p.m., and Sun., April 24, at 1 p.m. Based on E.L. Doctorow’s 1975 best-selling novel by the same name, the highly acclaimed musical has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards since debuting on Broadway in 1998. Directed and choreographed by Tony-nominated Marcia Milgrom Dodge, the performance follows three New Yorkers trying to find their ways during the early 1900s. A Jewish immigrant, a Harlem musician, and an upperclass house wife are united during their quests for better lives.

›› Film Love Atlanta, the unique screening series of untraditional films started by Andy Ditzler, continues at Atlanta Contemporary Fri., April 22, at 7 p.m. The series’ next installment features three rarely screened works that stray away from standard forms of filmmaking, including Sam Levine’s 1989 15-minute visually appeasing film, Notes After Long Absence, Chick Strand’s 1979 15-minute film, Cartoon Le Mousse, and Tadeu Jungle’s 1987 Brazilian movie with English subtitles, Heroes of Decadence

›› The 21st annual Hambridge Art Auction + Field Experiment Gala comes to the Goat Farms Art Center Sat., April 23, with a VIP preview party from 5-7 p.m., and the public auction running from 7-10 p.m. Selected by 12 curators, the silent auction features works from more than 150 artists. The event also features beer from the Orpheus Breweryand honorary chair Kevin Rathburn leads a culinary spectacle.
