Election 2011 results: E-SPLOSTs pass, APS race heads to runoff, Decatur really wants Sunday booze

OK, so where do we start?

• With nearly all votes counted, it appears that an extension of a 1-cent sales tax to pay for Atlanta and Fulton County schools’ capital programs — or E-SPLOST — has passed 64-36. (Any thoughts on how that might affect next year’s sewer and T-SPLOST referenda?)

• Ditto the E-SPLOST in Decatur and DeKalb County. According to unofficial results reported by WAGA, residents voted 63-37 to approve the measure.

• None of the five candidates vying to fill the open Atlanta Public Schools’ District 2 board seat garnered more than 50 percent of the vote. Which means it’s time for a runoff. First-time candidate Angela Brown, who received 38 percent of the vote, will face off against community organizer Byron Amos, the runner-up.

• Decaturites really really wanted the right to buy alcohol in stores on Sundays. According to unofficial results, at least 91 percent of voters supported the measure — the widest margin we’ve seen. Wear that as a badge of honor. Seriously.

“That’s the Lord’s day, in my opinion,’ said Deyton, a Sunday school teacher whose son is a Baptist music minister. “If you can’t do without alcohol one day a week, there’s something bad wrong with you.”
