Canny counter-programming, AMC: NBC has the Emmys, but Mad Men has the Clios. And everyone’s favorite is a lock: yes, that’s Don Draper, accepting the coveted award for Best Cleansers, Waxes and Polishes! It’s kind of hard to believe that Madison Avenue’s most revered genius is just accepting his first award, and it’s also kind of hard to believe he’s never showed up to a client meeting that visibly drunk, but when the television is this good it’s hard to quibble.

Yes, this episode marks another defeat for the forces of subtlety in the Mad Men universe, but the show continues to entertain like nobody’s business. This one managed to be laugh-out-loud funny throughout, balanced against unexpected moments of suspense and pathos.
