Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Beth Stelling’s coming to town!

Comedian Olivia Cathcart breaks down this week’s best bets

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some of Atlanta’s best local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.
Monday., April 27
The last Monday of the month hosts one of Atlanta’s newest shows, Comedy Night at Second Self Beer Co. Breweries have become a popular alternative venue for comedy shows, and it’s easy to see why. For just $15, you get into the show, a souvenir glass, and six beer tokens. It’s certainly a show where you’ll get the full bang for your buck. Hosted by Travis Jones, this month’s edition will also feature David Perdue, Paige Bowman, Dayne Swerdling, Kevin Saucier, Devon Gollinge, Joel Byars, Wellington Juku, and Aaron Chewning. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show at 7 p.m.

Tues., April 28
In exciting news, Dan Immke’s bi-weekly showcase The Standup Hour at Midtown Tavern, will now be a weekly show. Formerly held every-other Wednesday, this week’s show will be the first at it’s new day and time, every Tuesday, at 9 p.m. This week’s show features stand-up from William Miracle, Nathan Baine, Karen Hilton, and Tom Russell with one of Atlanta’s best closing out the show, Paul Gallois. Show starts at 9 p.m., and is always absolutely free.

Wed., April 29
The Hangar in Old Fourth Ward has become a popular destination for one-off shows with comedians like Ahmed Bharoocha, Ben Kronberg, and Karl Hess having made tour stops there in the past. This week, two comedians from New Orleans, Leon Blanda and Dane Faucheux, bring their For the Record Tour through the Hangar. Together the two are putting the finishing touches on a split album they’ll be recording at the end of the tour. The show also features ATL’s own, Dulce Sloan. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., show at 9 p.m. Free show but with a suggested donation of $5.

Thurs., April 30
Atlanta’s newest variety show is back at the Village Theatre; it’s Ladie’s Night. Now that’s not a special night out at the pub across the street, it’s ATL’s only live show that blends video sketches, stand-up, improv, and more. Members of the film and comedy community submit short comedic films for consideration each month. Four get screened and the audience votes on who gets named “Best Sketch.” Hosted by Brian Emond, Joel Ruiz, and Zach Lamplugh, the trio will also welcome stand-up from Kevin Saucier, Mike Kaiser, and David Perdue, with a special character set from Phoebe Perry. This free show starts at 10:30 p.m., but get there early as this show routinely packs out.

The Weekend >> While you can count on a handful of big names playing Atlanta every weekend, I’m especially excited to see Beth Stelling headline the Laughing Skull Lounge. Stelling is one of the fastest rising stars in comedy. She’s performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” “The Pete Holmes Show,” “Conan,” and was featured in an episode of the critically acclaimed web-series “Modern Comedian.” She’s performed at practically every comedy festival including Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival. She released her debut album, Sweet Beth, in 2012 which received glowing reviews, and just this year she was named one of Vulture’s “50 Comedians You Should Know.” Stelling is a great comic, and a breath of fresh air. You can see her headline six shows Thursday through Sunday.

>> On Friday, you can catch Lewis Black as he rolls into town on his The Rant is Due: Part Deux tour. Black will be playing one show at the Cobb Energy Centre on Friday at 8 p.m. In 2004, Black was voted 51 of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time by Comedy Central. Tickets are on sale, so if you’re looking for a fun Friday night, this is it.

>> The last two editions of the 1AM Secret Show were unbelievably amazing. I don’t know what’s in store this week, but that’s part of what makes this show so special … crazy, cool drop-ins happen at the last second pretty routinely. Some huge names have performed on that stage, and even on week’s with no celeb guests, the ATL comedy scene is well-represented. It’s one of my favorite shows and lately it’s been on a hot streak. Every Saturday at 1 a.m. (technically Sunday but c’mon) at Smith’s Olde Bar. Be there.
