Comic’s Weekly Roundup: From Dungeon to Marc Maron

Comedienne Olivia Cathcart breaks down the best bets from Monday to Sunday

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some of Atlanta’s best local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

Mon., May 11
Every other Monday you can get your fill of laughs and brews during Beer and Comedy Night at Sweetwater Brewery. Having just celebrated their four-year anniversary in April, Joe Pettis hosts one of the greatest shows in town. Now entering the warm summer months, shows will sometimes move outside the tap room and onto the patio, which is dog friendly. Be sure to check in on Facebook or Twitter to see when these days are. $10 gets you into the show, a souvenir pint, and beer tastings. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Seating is limited so I suggest you get there early, my friend.

Tues., May 12
One of Atlanta’s most unique shows is the interactive Dungeon at the Hangar. It’s comedy Dungeon and Dragons style as host Remi Treuer will act as the “Game Master,” guiding comedians through one-on-one fantasy adventures. Now in its seventh show at the DIY venue, Dungeon has gained a huge following and will be featured at it’s first comedy festival when Treuer takes the show to Omaha later this month for the Crom Comedy Festival. This month’s show features games from Travis Jones, Ismael Loutfi, and Phoebe Perry with stand-up from Chris Ledford, Will Copeland, and Joe Gallois. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 8:30 p.m. Free as always.

Wed., May 13
“Parks and Recreation” fans should be excited about this show; the funniest couple on TV, Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally bring their Summer of 69: No Apostrophe Tour to the Tabernacle. This raunchy variety show will serve as an ode to their love life, full of sketches, singing, and dancing. The 8 p.m. show is already sold out, but there’s still tickets available for the 10:30 p.m. show.

Fri., May 14
One of my favorite shows returns to WonderRoot this week; it’s WonderComedy. Every month, host Andrew Michael invites some of ATL’s funniest comedians to grace the stage at the best-damn sticker basement in the city. This month’s edition will be headlined by the hilarious Jake Brannon, a staple of both the Atlanta and Athens comedy scenes. Brannon will be joined by Mike Kaiser, Kevin Saucier, Dulce Sloan, Anthony Todaro, Joe Pettis, Shaunak Godkhindi, and more. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. $5 cash admission. Hanging out with funny people, friends, and some beer in this hip, cozy basement is one of my favorite parts of living in Atlanta. WonderComedy is some of the most affordable fun you can have in the city; you’d be a fool to miss this.

The Weekend
======>>> You can always expect a handful of headliners each weekend here, and this weekend will feature a big one. Marc Maron will headline one show at the Variety Playhouse on Sat., May 16th. Marc Maron is one of the biggest names in comedy right now. He hosts the every popular “WTF” podcast, he’s appeared on just about every late night show, stars on, writes, and produces on the IFC series “Maron” (which has been renewed for a third season), and has released multiple albums and specials including his most recent one, Thinky Pain. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are scarce so don’t delay.

>>> And of course you can get some late-night laughs at the 1AM Secret Show at Smith’s Olde Bar. John-Michael Bond hosts the most unpredictable show in town. Special guests pop in all the time, but you never know who or when. You just got to find out for yourself. Show starts at 1 a.m. Free as can be.
