Comic’s Weekly Roundup: From Billy Wayne Davis to Jay-Z

Comedian Olivia Cathcart’s best bets for Atlanta comedy

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see some of Atlanta’s top local comics, and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

Mon., June 29Comedy Night at Second Self Brewing is hosting a very special show headlined by the hilarious Billy Wayne Davis. Davis has been featured on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and “WTF with Marc Maron.” Travis Jones hosts the show that also includes ATL’s Ismael Loutfi and LA’s Erin Dewey Lennox (Bridgetown Comedy Festival, ESPN, MTV). Per usual, tickets are $15 and include six drink coupons. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., show at 7 p.m.

Tue., June 30
======If you miss Billy Wayne Davis on Monday, you’ll get another shot to catch him Tuesday night at the Highland Inn Ballroom. Davis will be headlining another show alongside Lennox, Jones, and John-Michael Bond. The Highland Ballroom is one of my favorite venues and has become a popular spot for comedy lately. Check out all the the glory for yourself Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Wed., July 1
======Breweries are becoming a popular venue for comedy. This week is the debut of Atlanta’s third brewery show, Safe Place at Orpheus Brewing. Hosted by Anthony Todaro, this new monthly show will feature stand-up from Loutfi, Samm Severin, Joe Pettis, Kyle Gillis, and Dedrick Flynn. $15 gets you in, a tour and top notch beer samplings. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

Wednesday night is the return of one of my favorite shows, Song Missing. This party-like atmosphere and blend of comedy and music makes Song Missing a fantastic live event. This month, comedians, musicians, writers, and more will be performing sets based on the music of Jay-Z; it’s Song Missing Presents A-TO-THE-IZZ-O-V-TO-THE-IZZ-A-TLANTA! The brilliant Chris Ledford will host a line-up that features David Perdue, Vas Sanchez, Gavin Godfrey, Cris Gray, Mark Kendall, Chris Alonzo, Christina Lee, and Alexandra Tucci. Grab your Magna Carta, watch the throne and get, that, dirt off your shoulder cause is a show you don’t want to miss. Village Theatre doors open at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m. $10 online, $15 at the door.

Thur., July 2Celebrate America this week with comedian sort-of history PhD Mike Kaiser and the Laughing Skull Lounge. Kaiser is a brilliant comedian who’s new show, the semi-lecture series A Person’s History of the United States,  is a breath of fresh air. Kaiser, who recently returned to Atlanta after living and performing in New York City and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will hilariously guide you through the history of American Independence. The show will also feature stand-up from David Perdue, Paul Gallois, and Cherith Fuller. Show’s at 10:30 p.m.

>> Over at the Village Theatre, it’s Ladie’s Night. Ladie’s Night combines live stand-up mixed with pre-filmed sketches from Secret Grampuh and Evatt and Bloom. The show also features sketch submissions from all over to be screened for the audience and special guest judges from Adult Swim who will pick their favorite. Winning group gets an automatic spot in next month’s show. Hosted by Brian Emond, Zach Lamplugh, and Joel Ruiz, the trio will invite local stand-ups Andrew Michael, Travis Jones, Craig Hoelzer, and Mo Arora to perform on Thursday’s show. Show starts at 10:30 p.m.; free admission.
