Comic’s Weekly Roundup: From John Hodgman to Sean White

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see local comics and visiting national touring acts. He’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

? Mon., Sep. 21
======As always, Star Bar on Monday is the place to be. The best, and longest-running, show in town showcases the funniest Atlanta residents all for free (oh, and there’s plenty of cheap beer to be had). This week’s show will also feature some fantastic out-of-town guests, so don’t miss it. Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9:30pm.

? Tue., Sep. 22
======Because Atlanta is flooded with breweries, the lovely Eventide Brewing will host their own comedy show on Tuesday. Hosted Andrew Michael (WonderComedy host and Reader’s Pick for “Best Local Comedian 2015”), the Eventide tap room will welcome seven killer comics for a night of hilarity and booze, including local favorites Paige Bowman, Mike Kaiser, Dan Weeks and more. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Admission comes with a tour of the brewery and a 36oz complimentary tasting. Doors open at 6:30pm, show at 7pm.

? >> Later that night, John Hodgman takes is Vacationland tour over to https://www.facebook.com/events/534084630057055/The Plaza Theatre. In addition to stand-up, Hodgman is a correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” host of the Judge John Hodgman podcast, and a best-selling author. Hodgman will be showcasing all new material tackling such subjects as Maine, the evolutionary purpose of the weird dad moustache, how the people of various rural towns are probably planning to sacrifice you to their god and so on. Show’s at 9:30pm. Tickets are $27.50.

? Wed., Sep. 23Wednesday night is the debut of another new stand-up showcase, Date Night. Hosted by John-Michael Bond and Travis Jones, it’s a show with a bit of a twist: every comic on the lineup will be waxing rhapsodic about a single topic. It’s like really one, long, hilarious, one sided conversation. Held at the amazing Brigantine Beer Parlor (in the back of Argosy in EAV), the inaugural show’s topic will be “love/dating” will be headlined by the fantastic Chicago comedian Sean White. White released his debut album “Dead & Gone” on AST Records earlier this year and received raved reviews including being listed in the AV Club’s “Best albums of 2015 so far.” He’s an incredibly original and hilarious comic; don’t miss this one. Doors open at 7pm; show’s at 8pm. Free.

? >> The movie/pop culture obsessed show, Scene Missing, is back this week. This month’s show will feature comedians, writers, musicians and more performing original sets based on the films of the cult favorite director, David Lynch: it’s Scene Missing Presents: BLUE VELVETLANTA. So take the Lost Highway and bring your spice to Atlanta’s answer to Mulholland Drive—the Highland Ballroom. Doors open at 8pm; show’s at 9pm. $10.

? Thur., Sep. 24
======The Laughing Skull has been taking their Best of Atlanta Comedy showcases to outside venues and found a great one in Eddie’s Attic. The Decatur space is great for comedy and each showcase it has hosted so far have been fantastic. This week’s show features another killer line-up that includes Brian Emond, Dulce Sloan, David Perdue, Ismael Loutfi and more. Doors open at 8:45pm (with pre-show music by Megg Serrano); show’s at 9pm. Tickets range from $10-$15.

? Fri., Sep. 25Over at the Highland Inn Ballroom, LA comedian Cameron Esposito headlines a special show this Friday. Esposito  has performed on Comedy Central’s “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail,” “Conan,” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” She’ll be joined on stage by the very funny Rhea Butcher (“Last Comic Standing”). Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 8:30pm. $10

? >> Late Friday night you can catch Atlanta’s most racy show: Underwear Comedy Party. Held the last Friday of every month at the Village Theatre, this show asks comics to perform in nothing but their undies. Show starts at 11pm. $10 admission but is free if you attend in your underwear (yes, people actually do this).

? The Weekend  This weekend, you can check out the “Bitter Budha” himself, Eddie Pepitone, headlining the Laughing Skull in Midtown. Pepitone is a hilarious comic who’s latest special, In Ruins, premiered on Netflix last year. In addition he’s performed on “Conan,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and has acted in such programs as “The Sarah Silverman Show,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Flight of the Conchords” and many more. He headlines six shows, Thursday through Sunday.

? >> On Sunday, you can catch another great show at a brewery: Pints & Punchlines at 5 Seasons Brewery (Prado location). This showcase brings you seven comics and some fine 5 Seasons brews for $15. Doors open at 7:30pm; show at 8pm.
