Comic’s Weekly Roundup: Funny Or Die’s Oddball Fest comes to town

Atlanta has one of the best comedy scenes in the country, and each week is filled with plenty of opportunities to see local comics and visiting national touring acts. Here’s your best bets for getting into some funny business.

? Tonight, the monthly showcase Comedy Night at Second Self returns! Travis Jones host a line-up of eight comedians, which pair perfectly with Second Self’s award winning brews. This month’s line-up includes such ATL favorites as Paul Gallois, Lace Larrabee, and one Red Clay Festival founder Gilbert Lawand! Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; show at 7 p.m. $15 gets you in, a souvenir glass, and six drink tickets.

? Wed., Sep. 30ATLien on the rise, Mia Jackson, headlines a special show at the Highland Inn Ballroom. Jackson recently appeared on the ninth season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” where she made it all the way to the semi-finals. She’ll be joined on stage by Lace Larrabee, Travis Jones, and David Perdue. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show’s at 8 p.m. $10.

? >> Also on Wednesday, JT Habersaat’s Altercation Punk Comedy Tour comes to Old Fourth Ward. Presented by Stand Up! Records and the Doug Stanhope Celebrity Deathpool, the comedians will be joined on stage at the Hangar by Austin’s Jay Whitecotten and Houston’s Brian Zeolla. Show starts at 8 p.m., with a suggested donation of $5.

? Thur., Oct. 1On Thursday night, the Village Theatre host one of the most wildly popular shows in town: Ladie’s Night. Combining stand-up with sketch comedy, this monthly event has hosted standing-room only crowds since its inaugural show in January. Hosts Brian Emond, Joel Ruiz, and Zach Lamplugh showcase their own brand new material as well as four sketches from the Atlanta film and comedy communities. The audience, as well as some very special judges from Adult Swim, pick their favorite sketch. Between videos, the show will feature stand-up sets from John-Michael Bond, David Perdue, and more. Show starts at 10:30 p.m. Free.

It’ll be Lawrence’s first time back at the Fox in over 20 years. Most know Lawrence for his acting roles in such films as Bad Boys, Blue Streak, and the hit TV show “Martin.” Before that, Lawrence hosted HBO’s groundbreaking “Def Comedy Jam.” Lawrence will headline four shows over two days (two Friday shows were added due to high demand).

? The Weekend  Some of the biggest names in comedy all hit the stage Sunday for Funny Or Die’s monstrous Oddball Festival. The line-up is a murderer’s row of stand-up featuring Aziz Ansari, Amy Schumer, Nikki Glaser, Anthony Jeselnik, Jeff Ross, Bridget Everett, Tim Minchin, and Sebastian Maniscalco. As if that wasn’t enough, Big Jay Oakerson will be holding down the side stage that will also welcome some local Atlanta comics. Tickets range from $40-$160, so jump on the cheap ones now cause I can’t imagine they’ll last long. Party starts at 5 p.m., at Aaron’s Amphitheatre.
