Mary Norwood to run for Fulton County Commission post

She's back

Mary Norwood, the semi-manic former Atlanta City Councilwoman who lost last year's mayoral election by a razor-thin margin, says she's not done with politics.

The AJC's Jim Galloway this morning brought news that Norwood has announced she'll challenge Fulton County Chairman John Eaves in this year's elections. She made the announcement last night at a Johns Creek GOP function, which sounds like it must have been a hoot.

Norwood will run as an independent, which is a cagey way to appeal to both party's supporters. But the decision makes sense when you consider her campaign trail claims that she wasn't red or blue, but "purple." (If you recall, Norwood's political affiliation became a hot-button issue during the mayoral campaign. The Democratic Party of Georgia inserted itself into the mayor's race — which is supposed to be nonpartisan — and sent out mailer ads basically calling her a closeted Republican. She managed to make one of the most awesome analogies we've ever heard about voting for the elephants.)

This could become a really interesting fight to watch. And not just because Norwood is a feisty campaigner.
