Dear John Oxendine, GDOT and other tunnel-under-Atlanta lovers

If you’re gonna talk about tunnels under Atlanta, please let us know where emissions-belching ventilation ducts will be built. Thanks!

God knows if the underground toll road that’s been talked about as a metro Atlanta “transportation solution” has any legs. But if it does, Georgians should be aware of its potential impact.

Courtesy of Joe Winter, whose 2007 CL article about toll tunnels should be required reading, we proudly present a photo of ventilation ducts that were built in Boston to pump out the noxious emissions generated by cars traveling on the Big Dig’s subterranean roadways.

That looks like just the kind of intown development that Atlanta needs! Or we could just build ‘em outside the city. Maybe in North Fulton? Just think of how much these fixed sources of pollution (fueled by the extra cars traveling on the subterranean roads) could add to the metro region’s excellent air quality! And who cares if our air quality worsens, potentially causing us to lose federal transportation funding? We could just build toll roads, right? Local control! Big ideas! Progress!
