McCann crashes All-Star party

Brian McCann was named MVP of the 2010 All-Star Game and it should surprise no one here in the ATL.

Before their 3-1 victory last night in Los Angeles, Calif., the National League hadn’t won an All-Star Game since 1996.

Some guy named Clinton was in the White House, gas cost about $1.30 a gallon and Atlanta was hosting the Summer Olympics.

Yep, it had certainly been awhile—there’s little doubt about that.

But when five-time All-Star Brian McCann stepped into the batter’s box for his second at-bat of the evening, the unassuming Athens native was simply asked to do the unexpected—to the majority of baseball fans, at least—and halt the winless streak at 13.

With the N.L. trailing, 1-0, in the top of the seventh inning, the Atlanta catcher walked to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.

After falling behind in the count 0-2, McCann laced a line-drive double down the right field line and assured the National League home-field advantage in the World Series, ultimately earning MVP honors.
